Berrypicking

Every summer we were sent to the woods to pick berries. We stayed all day. We picked in big milkpails. In one of them we had packed our lunch for noon. Our lunch consisted of a loaf of bread, a ring of home-made sausage, and some sugar to put on some mashed berries to make jam for our bread. One day, we had picked one 14-quart pail full of berries when the cows came along and found them. They ate all the berries they could get. I can still see how the pail looked after their big wide tongues had smashed and eaten them. Needless to say, after that we hung our pails in the tree, and went home with very few berries that day.
